Feminist Strike 2023 Manifesto

We call for a new feminist strike on June 14th, 2023! Since 2019, when half a million people took over the Swiss streets to demand gender equality, we have had some successes but also drawbacks. In higher education specifically we still notice persistent sexist, LGBTQ+phobic, racist, classist, ableist, and ageist discriminatory structures and practices, which strongly impact our study and work conditions and thus our life, and which ultimately harm the production and the circulation of knowledge.

Liveable working conditions and real career options

Higher education jobs should be compatible with private life, in particular with family life and care work. Overworking ourselves with little pay should stop being the norm. Precariousness in employment hinders an inclusive higher education, and thus an inclusive science! We need real career options to envision a future in higher education, so that not only the most privileged among us get to stay. We need to overcome persistent discriminatory biases in recruitment processes. We demand to move past the romanticized, elitist, and male-centric ideal of a scholar travelling the world and living only for research.

  • Teaching and research must be adequately remunerated. Pay for teaching and other academic work should never be delayed until the end of the semester.
  • We need realistic and binding workload specifications indicating our exact roles and reserving enough protected time for our research.
  • When it is wanted, job-sharing and work-time reduction must be possible and encouraged.
  • As the Petition Academia accepted by the National Council in July 2022 has already demanded, we reiterate that academic positions should be diversified through the creation or expansion of permanent mid-level positions between research assistantships and professorships. At least half of the positions after the PhD funded by universities should be permanent, so that young academics have stable career options.
  • Mobility to other universities within and outside of Switzerland are to be encouraged and funded but should not be a formal or informal requirement for career advancement or job applications.
  • We call for the introduction and expansion of parental leave, so that childcare and child-rearing can actually take place on an equal footing. The legal and financial security of parental leave must also be guaranteed in third-party funded projects. Parental leave must not come at the expense of researchers by being deducted from allocated research time.
  • The infrastructure for childcare at universities must be further expanded. There must be sufficient and affordable places in daycare centers as well as an adequate supply of parent-child rooms, i.e. for breastfeeding and changing.
  • Career and grants evaluation criteria on all levels should be transparent, discussed collectively and broadened beyond mere performance quantification (i.e., publications). Teaching, supervision, mentoring skills should be better recognized as well as engagement for the higher education community and public outreach.

More democracy, less hierarchy within academia

We want a democratic university freed from the arcane hierarchies prevailing with the outdated chair system. Research projects, decision-making and supervision duties should not be concentrated in the hands of professors, who are themselves overworked.

  • Research projects should not be allocated to principal investigators, but to teams. All faculty should be recognized as colleagues worthy of having a say in the way projects are launched and run.
  • All employees should have equal decision-making rights in university committees.
  • We demand gender parity in all recruitment committees, juries, and funding committees of higher educational institutions and of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
  • Responsibilities for research supervision should be more collegial and independent from work hierarchies.
  • We demand more official spaces to discuss power relations and their impact on our working conditions and on the production of knowledge.

End all forms of discrimination, particularly based on gender

We will only achieve true inclusion in higher education if people feel safe to study and to work in higher education institutions and know that said institutions are committed to fighting discrimination in its multidimensional and intersectional forms.

  • We demand more resources to prevent discrimination and sexual harassment in higher education and to support victims.
  • We demand that sexual harassment reports be investigated by an indepedent third-party allowing a safe and fair process.
  • We call to strengthen mediation offices and positions and make them more independent.
  • To ensure long-term change, we need university-wide training of all staff and students to recognize and fight all forms of discrimination (sexist, LGBTQ+phobic, racist, classist, ableist, and ageist) and sexual harassment.
  • To ensure fair hiring practices and human resources management, we particularly call for mandatory training for people who sit on appointment committees and fill management positions.
  • We demand administrative and infrastructural adjustments for non-binary, trans and intersex people. Forced outings and false gender ascriptions at universities should be countered. In general, unnecessary gendering should be suppressed, i.e. through a simplified alignment or deletion of the gender entry in administrative processes or gender-neutral toilets. We call for staff training and competent points of contact on these issues at every university.
  • We demand SaferSpaces for women, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, transgender and agender people to have a break from the stress of discrimination, share their experiences and build solidarity.
  • We demand that higher education institutions take our well-being in all its aspects seriously, including menstruation pains and mental health.
  • We demand free menstruations products for all.

Democratize knowledge and education

All of the points above are necessary structural conditions to allow all of us to engage equally in research, teaching and learning, and therefore to democratize knowledge. Higher education should not promote an elitist pressure to perform, leading to self-doubt and exclusion, nor should it commodify knowledge to fit with neoliberal capitalism. Particularly in light of the current climate crisis, universities should be spaces of open discussions for all, where we can imagine and build the solutions to current environmental, social, economic and democratic issues, necessary to create a livable and just future for all. Institutions, professional associations, and individuals should also use and promote specific tools to that aim:

  • Secure and strengthen the place of critical forms of knowledge in universities and across disciplines (gender studies and in particular queer studies, feminist, intersectional and decolonial perspectives, environmental studies and degrowth studies, ...).
  • Employ, promote, and educate on inclusive and anti-discriminatory language options.
  • Address issues regarding discrimination and power imbalances in research and teaching.
  • Make sure that meetings, seminars, panel discussions and conferences are as inclusive and participatory as possible, in particular by ensuring a good gender balance and by preventing any kind of majority (due to gender identity, sexual orientation, origin, disciplin, language, etc.) to talk over a minority.
  • Instead of simply "teaching to the test", support and engage with antihierarchical and antidiscriminatory teaching practices, i.e. by making learning objectives explicit and designing meaningful and varied performance assessments adapted to students' constraints.
  • Focus on the representation of marginalized groups in our research and teaching.
  • Highlight and amplify research from marginalized groups in our research and teaching (minorities in Switzerland and scholars from the Global South).
  • Engage more proactively with civil society on an equal footing about forms of knowledge, be they academic or not.
  • Engage with and make space for political activism, in particular by keeping June 14th (day of the feminist strike) free of exams.
